The Ancestors Of Eliza James Yakey’s Mother:

The Lincoln Connection

Both sets of 3x Great-Grandparents of Eliza James Yakey first arrived in Loudoun County, VA around 1744, settling in the area around Lincoln. James and Ann (Van Sandt) Hatcher, married in 1727, came from Buck County, PA. Isaac and Margery (Cox) Nichols, married in 1742, arrived from Chester County, PA. These two families were united when Catherine Nichols married James Hatcher on May 31, 1766 at the Goose Creek Monthly Meeting in Lincoln. Several generations of these families were associated with the Goose Creek MM and are buried in the Goose Creek Burying Ground. In fact, in 1745 the Goose Creek MM held their first meetings in the home of Isaac and Margery Nichols. (See Family Tree at bottom)

The above arial view shows the Yakey farm. Click on the image and a map drawn in 1853 will overlay the image, showing the property boundaries at that time. In the map view the property is marked “S. Yakey”. The original 140 acre farm bordered Lovettsville Rd & Yakey Lane to the north and Taylorstown Road to the west. This property was purchased by Simon Yakey in 1832, inherited in 1870 by Simon’s grandson Thomas Simon Yakey via Simon’s will, and then after the death of Eliza Yakey it was purchased in 1919 by Jason Arnold, husband to Thomas & Eliza Yakey’s daughter Katherine Bondeena Yakey Arnold. Jason sold the property in 1933. The property was in our family for 101 years. Most recently the Yakey Farm (now roughly 50 acres) was purchased in 2019 and became the Flying Ace Brewery.

In 1839 Simon Yakey purchased another farm bordering the Potomac River that was 117.5 acres (upper left corner of the image and overlay).

Martin Yakey Obituary 1846

Transcribed:

Near Lovettsville Loudoun County Va on the 3rd (?) Mr. Martin Yakey aged 30 years 11 months and 11 days.

Mr. Yakey was taken ill on the evening of the 26th of December. His sufferings, from the time he was taken till he died, were almost past endurance. Yet not a murmur escaped his lips. He bore them with christian firmness and christian resignation. When informed of his approaching dissolution, he reflected “the will of His Lord be done”. Frequently during his illness he would speak with the greatest confidence of his going home to heaven. He longed, he said, to be there. Earth had no attraction for him.

Martin (Yeaca) Yakey. Is He Simon’s Father?

As you can see above, there were a number of men named Simon and Martin in the Yakey family lineage. Searches online for ancestors beyond Simon Yakey (1771-1846) have been futile. There is one man named Martin Yeaca who wrote a will in 1807 (recorded in the Loudoun County Courthouse) that mentions his wife Catharine, a son Simon, and daughters Elizabeth and Mary. He also mentions a Catharine Davis and a Peter Yeaca. These last two names could be a son and daughter, but he does not refer to them as such in the will.

Wills were hand transcribed into the official Loudoun books of wills, so it is possible that the name Yakey was mistakenly written as Yeaca. It is also possible that the name Yakey was originally spelled Yeaca and because of dialect the name changed spelling based on the way it sounded. Regardless, it appears that this Martin is in fact the father of the Simon Yakey who was born in 1771. So far no other references to this Martin “Yeaca” Yakey can be found, so we do not have any other dates for him other than his 1807 will, and we do not know if he was born in Loudoun. Click below to read a transcribed copy of Martin’s 1807 will.
